Helping all employees adjust to the new policy

When adopting a smoke-free workplace policy, it is important to help your employees adjust to the changes implemented with the new policy.  Smokers in particular will feel the effects of the policy change immediately.  Following are some things that you can do to help ease the transition to a smoke-free workplace for your employees.

bullet

Inform your employees in advance that a new policy is being developed.  This will help to prepare them for the eventual changes that will take place once the new policy goes into effect.

bullet

Once the policy has been implemented, let your smoking employees know that you appreciate their efforts to comply with the new policy.

bullet

The new policy is likely to prompt some of your employees to quit smoking.  Quitting is difficult for many people, especially if they don't have access to smoking cessation programs and services.  In the interest of supporting your policy and the health of your employees, offer smoking cessation assistance to any employees who wish to quit smoking.

bullet

Ask nonsmoking employees to support and encourage smokers in their efforts to reduce or quit smoking.

bullet

Plan for continuing support of smokers who want to quit.
